Introduction -
.biz -
introduction [introduction | restrictions
| preregistration]
Definition
".biz" is
a new top-level-domain "TLD". The official date for opening
of registrations is 17th September. Prior to this date, the registry is
accepting preregistrations.
You can only register
a .biz name if you are a business - "Registrations in the .biz TLD
must be used or intended to be used primarily for bona fide business or
commercial purposes". Further restrictions and terms can be found
here.
The registry for .biz,
neulevel.com are accepting preregistrations from now until 17th September.
It does not matter when you apply, because all preregistration applications
will be picked from the queue at random, so there is little or no advantage
from being first to pre-register for a domain and there is a certain amount
of luck involved. All pre-registrations will be processed by the registry
prior to "opening the doors" to registrations in "real-time".
Application
Application is simple.
There is no name search because at the moment, all domains are theoretically
available. Simply fill in the preregistration application
form and wait until september 17th.
(aq) will, of course,
be offering the normal "search and register" service as soon
as the realtime registration period starts.
The lottery
It is difficult to
think of any other word to describe a registration of this type. (aq)
refrain from comment as to whether this is fair or best practice, but
it does stop large multi-nationals from grabbing all the good names.
The good news is,
because it is a kind of lottery, there is nothing to stop you from buying
more than one "ticket". This gives you a greater probability
of securing your name, but it DOES NOT GUARANTEE that your registration
will be successful
The costs for
preregistration depend on how many applications you want to submit. (aq)
limited is charged for every application that it makes on your behalf.
We are also charged automatically for 2 years registration for the domain
if the application is successful.
Because of this, we
charge £35 + vat for pre-registration of a .biz domain. This breaks
down as:
- £5 + vat
-- preregistration fee -- STRICTLY NON-REFUNDABLE
- £30 + vat
-- to cover 2 years domain registration if successful. If you are unsuccessful,
we will refund this part of the fee
Multiple registrations
Because it is only
possible for one application to be successful for each domain name, there
is nothing to stop you putting in multiple applications. This increases
your chance of success of registering a particular domain. We offer bulk
discounts for multiple domain applications. The table below shows a breakdown
of the charges. Please note, in all cases, regardless of how many preregistration
attempts you purchase, if your application is unsuccessful, we will only
refund you £30 + vat.

Live and ready
to go
Your .biz domain application,
if successful, should be live and on the registries "whois"
server by October 1st. This means that you can then order webspace or
email services and your domain will then be "live" and ready
to use.
What about .info?
when are they available?
.info, unlike .biz,
are open to anyone. There will be a preregistration period starting mid
september. We will let all our clients know when we have the official
procedure and prices. We do know that preregistration will be a similar
mechanism to the .biz preregistration, such that the domains will be held
in a pool and registered in a random order.
